A Closer Look at Hoarding

Too Much to Let Go?

We often picture hoarding as a cluttered home, but rarely stop to consider what drives the need to hold on. Behind the stacks and storage bins is usually something heavier: fear, grief, trauma, or a sense of safety that only “stuff” can provide.

Hoarding disorder isn’t about laziness or mess. It’s rooted in real cognitive, emotional, and neurological challenges, ones that affect daily life, relationships, and well-being.

It’s easy to judge what we can see. It’s harder to sit with what we don’t understand. But that’s where empathy starts.
